To \u201chatch,\u201d artists <a href=\"https:\/\/museum.middcreate.net\/projects\/early-modern-dutch-prints\/engraving\" data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"https:\/\/museum.middcreate.net\/projects\/early-modern-dutch-prints\/engraving\">engrave<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/museum.middcreate.net\/projects\/early-modern-dutch-prints\/etching\" data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"https:\/\/museum.middcreate.net\/projects\/early-modern-dutch-prints\/etching\">etch<\/a>, or draw parallel lines closely together to suggest shadow and create the illusion of depth, form, texture, or movement. Artists can vary the thickness, spacing, length, curvature, or angle of the lines to produce different effects.
